POWER MATTER IN NIGERIA

Wow, it's been over seven years I made a post on this blog and so much has taken place in the the Electricity supply industry (ESI) in Nigeria. The industry has been liberalized, and the state owned enterprise split to form privatised Generation companies (GenCOs), Distribution Companies (DisCos) and a transmission Comapny (TCN, owned by the State). others include Bulk electricity trader (NBET) and of course the regulator(NERC). The reform in the nation's ESI is patterned after the UK model of the early 90s and also currently in the early stages with the associated teething problems linked with electricity reforms worldwide. Already, there are lots of discussions ongoing on very fundamental components of a liberalized and market driven power sector such as:
  • Mitigating Transmission & Distribution losses to drive efficiency in the ESI.
  • Development and integration of embedded generation. Development micro grid in the Nigerian power sector.
  • integration of renewable sources such as Solar photo-voltaic power generation and lots more.
The power sector has witnessed a lot of development as well as controversies in the last 10 years, but one thing is certain, The Nigerian Electricity Industry is revving up powerfully for a positive change
